Communication is an important skill for teachers and when applying for a job as a teacher, including a cover letter with your application is one way to demonstrate to the hiring manager how well you communicate.
Submitting a well-crafted cover letter shows professionalism and gives you a way to highlight your skills and experiences that could pique their interest enough to invite you for an interview.
Your research skills will help you write a good cover letter when you apply for a teaching position. Start by finding out who the head of the school is and address your letter to them. You’ll want to do away with a generic introduction and personalize your cover letter with the name of the person who is most likely to read your cover letter, which most likely will be the school principal.
Highlight the projects that you’ve been a part of and discuss the positive impact on the school of those projects. Your resume is the right place to put your certifications but it would be best to mention the most relevant ones in your cover letter.

Dear Ms. Scheiber,
I am delighted to learn that the Mountainview Secondary School is in need of a secondary school teacher and I am happy to send my application to be considered for the open position. For the past six years, I have been teaching students at Augusta Secondary School which is similar in size to the student population of Mountainview Secondary School. In my teaching career, I’ve taught students in a range of subjects but I have particular strengths in teaching Math, Science, and History.
It brings me great joy to see my pupils succeed and I’m proud to say that some of my students excelled in their subjects well enough to represent the school in state-wide academic competitions. I served as the advisor to several teams in both Math and Science with three of the teams I advised winning the top prizes.
Aside from being the advisor to our Quiz Teams, a school initiative that I am proud to have been an important part of is the peer-tutorial program that helped struggling students get a better grasp of their subjects with the help of their peers. Peer tutors under the program are volunteers who earn extra credit for their participation. Participants under the program were able to increase their scores while the volunteer tutors were able to hone their leadership and social skills.
Another project that I am particularly proud of is that I was part of the committee that raised funds for the construction of a new science laboratory for the school. Our committee was able to raise enough funds from the alumni and local businesses to build a fully-equipped lab that helped the school provide experiential science education to the students.
